4 Reasons You Should Lift Weights
People are always looking to improve their lives. their bodies and how they feel. That's why people buy nice clothes, nice cars and other nice things, they make you feel good. The same is true about working out. Most people, I find, start working out for aesthetic reasons.Whether you're looking to tone up, bulk up or trim down it can all be done through weightlifting, as well as many other great benefits!
1. You can't "tone" fat!
So many people come to the gym in hopes to "tone up," but claim that they don't want to work with the weights. They have this unsettling fear inside of them that they're going to become a body builder.I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you cannot tone fat. You cannot sculpt and mold fat into a shape. You can only sculpt and mold muscle, which is done by lifting weights. Again, this is not something that can be done by moseying along on an elliptical for hours.Lifting weights in the proper intensity, rep range and even order can and will make the difference you are ultimately looking for.
2. Functionality in the gym = functionality in your life
Most people look lifting weights and think of exercises like bench press or bicep curls. There are far better exercises for you that yield far more in terms of functionality.Below are a few exercises that I have my clients do regularly due to the efficiency and functionality of them. These exercises are functional patterns that carry over into your life so that you can be functional in and out of the gym!
3. A moving body is a happy body!
Don't trap yourself inside of your body, lifting weights is a great way to move around your body and move around your emotions.Have a shit day at work? Go workout, break a sweat and let the endorphins flow.Lifting weights can be a great stress relief and it can be a great confidence booster too!Working through pain and struggle to finally accomplish a goal provokes a sense of satisfaction.
4. Lifting weights burns more calories.
Ever wonder why an hour on the treadmill only burned 200 calories?I know a lot of people who spend their time cranking away on the treadmill, elliptical or bike expecting a miracle to happen. But the real magic happens in the weight room, or in our gym the whole gym floor.Lifting weights can burn up to 150 cal in 15 minutes if properly executed through major compound movements, supersets or circuits.Ohh, and you will also tone up while burning, so what do you have to lose except fat?
