3 Key Tips to Weight Management
by Tyler Shamaly
Let’s face it, it’s that time of the year; people tend to understand that “it’s time to stop messing around” because they have to become conscious about losing weight.
While on the pursuit to change your body, there are three crucially important tips that you need to keep in mind in order to reach your goal.
1. Don’t Follow Trends
When on the mission to lose weight, gain weight or change body composition, people think that they need to do something over the top or extraordinary to make the change they want as fast as they can.
Trends will tell you to cut carbs, stop eating this or drink shakes instead of food; all of which are not healthy ways of losing weight.
You want to make a sustainable change in your lifestyle that will allow you to lose the weight you need to lose while also favoring towards your taste buds. Whether your problem is portion control or putting down the sweets, one life saving app that helps us at Ascension is MyFitnessPal.
It is a sustainable way of tracking and monitoring what you eat in order ensure that you are not having too little of too much of the foods that are keeping you from your goals. Rather than following trends, follow data, that’s why MyFitnessPal is so great.
2. Cut Out Unnecessary Stresses
Stress is a huge culprit of breathing problems, inflammation, digestive problems and so much more. When on the conquest to losing or managing weight, stress is one of the “magical” things that can make or break someone’s ability to properly manage their weight.
When you and your body are stressed, your nervous system engages the Sympathetic Nervous System which cuts out your abilities to properly rest and digest. With this constant state of “fight or flight,” your body is no longer able to wage out your food or sleep properly, therefore throwing off your goals and stressing you out more.
If you feel stressed in the least, you should focus more energy on breathing, being in nature and trying to simply enjoy the current moment you are living in. Trust me, I know this is all easier said than done, but if you can bring yourself back to equilibrium your body can regulate much easier, therefore allowing you to lose or gain weight easier.
Meditation, stretching or breathing can largely help to reengage your Parasympathetic Nervous System, therefore allowing you to get back into a “rest and digest” mode. I find that foam rolling, stretching and certain balance / stabilization exercises ground me the most, bringing me back to equilibrium and clearing my cluttered mind.
3. Be Consistent
Let’s be real, we all know that being consistent in life is a very important thing. The more habits you develop, the less you have to put forth conscious effort to doing things, so make those habits good!
Some get trapped by mindless snacking rather than mindless stretching. There are always alternatives to bad habits, it’s just a matter of getting through the uncomfortable beginnings of starting new habits like stretching, meal prepping, working out and going to bed at a good time.
If you gave your job half of your effort, you would probably end up losing a good job and the same goes for your body. Sooner or later, giving your body half of what it needs will lead to joint problems, pains and digestive issues, make sure to build habits that will allow for flourishing.
That’s as simple as it gets, a little work towards your goals everyday will eventually push you in the right direction.
